The balance mod does not preclude the use of the performance patch

guys... performance patch...

we would need a patch that raises performance
at around 200%

why? cause now i get with 5ghz+ fps drops down to 40fps in lategames.
(3770k @5ghz, ram 32gb@2400hz and a ssd raid which delivers over 2gb/s)

i ve got a 144hz screen which i ve used (past perfect tense cause i quit playing games, FU UWE!)
at 120 strobed fps.

to be able to play flawless, i would need at least stable 120+ fps
(which i can reach in all other games when i want to).

100% more from 40fps would be gigantic 80fps
200% more would be 160 fps which i call okay.

why just okay? well... cause i ve got a top machine which costs WAY too much money
its even way to expensive for me, but i am cutting my bread and butter videos with it,
so it saves me time and therefore money.

MAY I REMEMBER you guys, one of the KEY!!!-arguments of ns2 :
PLAYABLE WITH LOW POWERED SYSTEMS

pcs which where sufficient for ns1 should ve been enough for ns2...
what a joke... can you remember the first released min specs?
they dropped that goal without ever admitting it... instead we have that
PR egomaniac just selling-copies-interested narcissistic ns2hd guy...

but as long as he makes baby-charlie happy and doesn't get replaced,
we cant expect to read any real truth from that company again.

AH and this guy with his selling statistics on page 3:

UWE SOLD OVER 400.000 COPIES OF NS2!
they are in the millions ... but never mind, i can understand they would
never survive without this shitload of money and they have to keep the income
flowing!! cause u can never survive with this amount of money for longer then...

and all the stinky open source engines and games out there aren't surviving too :O

(kinda true, cause great communities like we ARE,
are still sticking with stupid money orientated companies
- and we let us screw over and over and over by all those EAs and UWEs out there...
and we hope and belive again and again and again... like little children love
their parents, no matter how hard they abuse them...

instead we should turn to a free engine and make our own game,
we got great artists on all fields, many and nearly all the good parts of ns2 are community made!!!)

... wait a second.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_freeware_first-person_shooters

i am just cutting out some stunning games & engines:

war$ow
nexuiz
cube2 aka sauerbraten

i know, they all look shit, have bad performance/netcode/gameplay
and cost a lot of money. the developers dont listen to the community
and the games are totally unmodable. they all pretend to be open developing
but in reality the developers screwing over their communities ... NOT!

i would love to see something free and community made upcoming,
i would donate (instead of pre-ordering) again and
i would also wait another 6 years for the game to come out.
i would convince all my friends to play and support it, like i did with ns2 and
i would write to newspapers to write pre and reviews a lot - again.

in the end its our choice.
(especially ppl like mendasp, putting a lot of effort in a dead born project
which whom other ppl are getting rich.)

It amazes me some people with top-end systems are still struggling to get decent fps. I have an i5 running at 4.2 ghz. 16 GB ram @ 1333 mhz, just a standard sata II HDD and an AMD 6850.

I run the game fine with around 130 fps on 1280 x 720 and most graphical options turned off. I also stream a lot of the time while keeping my fps around the 80-120 area. Maybe you are getting some bottle-necking in your system somewhere.

My fps on large public servers can drop to around 60 but that is very late game with a 24 slot server but it very rarely goes down that low.

when i played at 1024x768 i also had better fps values, but...
i dont run into performance problems with other games...

and the 100ms barrier they put in the netcode, that comp players cant rule
public servers... didnt bring a thing.

top players are top for a reason
and trying to hold em down by "making everyone equal" didnt work.
esp... making everyone equal? ... ... ...

For now the easy thing to do would be this:

Participate in the Balance Mod Cup.
Give useful Feedback.(like get rid of aliencomm and make the gorge AWESOME again)
(maybe play on balance moded servers a bit)

Pray to the gods that someday they fix the performance.

OR

STOP PLAYING NS2 !

Everything else is atm a waste of time.

and as b1 said: ADAPT OR DIE !

The balance cup isn't going to work. There won't be enough games and rounds to experience every tactic to see if what's viable or not. Which buildings(chambers)/tech routes/lifeforms work out. Preferable over the balance cup, you'd need two balanced teams to play each other over 30-40 rounds on summit/tram/veil.

Summit: How lifeforms play out
Tram: How chambers/buildings/arcs play out
Veil: How tech routes play out

These three maps are based around these values in the game imo. Summit, player skill. Tram, tactics. Veil, tech routes.

Every round will come down mostly due to player skill because no one knows any viable strategies yet making commanders an utterly random source of input into the game. They could make a great mistake without realising it, or a massive error. No one knows how to counter 1cc jetpacks or 1cc, tres exo. No one knows at what time will these be accessible and with what other upgrades there will be. When do you go for biomass? When do you drop a second hive? When do you push the second hive? What do you do with 50tres egg spawns every 4 seconds?

Yes that's what makes balance mod amazing in my opinion. That you can have all these different tactics. But no one will be able to tell just how balanced everything is over 1 cup. You're going to have a lot of input from games where teams were imbalanced and this is not going to have a very positive impact on balance.

I dont think anyone expects this cup to solve every possible problem that the balance mod might have.

But it will still create lots of useful input!

And i think the thing that noone really knows anything yet will make this SO MUCH MORE FUN .. ESPECIALLY FOR COMMS !

It is once again like NS should be .. SMART PPL WIN !

i am looking forward to this :) !

I am actually thinking about joining a team just to be able to play this balance mod in a decent setup 8) !

Wob, the goal is not to have players just play the Mod at the Cup - you should all start practicing it RIGHT NOW. 30-40 rounds is perfectly possible if you play your PCWs from now on on the mod.

We HIGHLY encourage you to do that, because it is almost certain that MANY changes from the Mod will be carried into the real game VERY SOON. This could even be BEFORE the Cup starts.

So the earlier you learn the changes and new strats, the better. We can only tell you this, no one should be surprised by an upcoming patch changing the balance of NS2 drastically.

Lmao, yea i'll be sure to say it to the other 800 concurrent players.
The balance mod is really what we need right now!
Anyway next week is the beta 247 (:>) we will see what it brings, my hopes: 120 constant fps. (lol)

It's difficult to play the mod now because only a few teams actually have their own server and even fewer have the balance mod on it; not to mention that teams have been folding and dying making it more difficult to find pcws.

The fact is that the cup IS the only way to play the mod for many teams without getting rolfstomped by personal skill levels. The beta mod is not accessible enough and ENSL just announcing a cup in hope of encouraging people to play it won't change much. It's like having a drinking contest where 100 people are trying to drink only through a straw... but there's only 1 straw.

Would it be possible to change some of the gather servers to have a vote for the balance mod?

blind, the fact that this isnt happening doesnt concern you a bit? shouldnt the tepid response from the very people the mod targets indicate that something isnt quite right?

Wob, (and indeed others interested)

I can put up a passworded balance mod server (or 2) if people want one to use for PCW.

I will aim to have it done some point this evening.

Team156 has been running a few balance mod servers that we regularly get games going on. Its like any NS2 server in which you just have to seed it for a while to get it going.

So, the performance is still not here, ns2 doctors are trying to keep the game on life support with the BT mod.
The fps counter is a fluke it shows a calculation of your fps as it is fluctuating so much ie: 90 shown means jumps to 120 frames but dips to 60. rofl
Bots on the uwe forums calling anything between 50-80fps and a 30 tickrate good. <- LOL
The "performance patch" is them working on some lua modifications that "will take some time" <- LOL
God this is going in the right direction.

Oh look veil is updated to play better: aka goes back to the ns1 layout, aka UWE you see? ns1 was good as it was didn't need to change it all.

It's like CS, quake, TF2 etc... Why change a working gameplay?
You always have the same downies spouting omfg oldschoolers dont like changement, well guess what football hasn't changed in the last 100 years and it's still the most played and watched sport in the world.
Ofc you can keep the base game and add new stuff but it shouldnt be the other way around aka slowly coming back to what was working.

Another french rant: Why is there prizes for a short BT cup when the teams who invest for a full season (8 weeks) get nothing. I mean ok i know the guys from arc, godar, sauna, miau etc dont rly give a fuck about t-shirts and shit but doesn't it kill the season's interest wich is allready low looking at all the disbanding teams (+/- 30%)?

@herakles

the prizes are to get teams into playing the balance mod.
motivation to play it and myb even abuse strats and possible exploits, so we see them fix for the live build.
